Volunteer Interview: Taya

What is your role at CAS and what does it involve?

I am currently the Editor at Connection Arts Space. My role involves a variety of tasks, including running a team of content creators. Since beginning my volunteer position, I have created a consistent email newsletter and with that comes conducting artist interviews and keeping updated with events and news around the Dandenong community. I also undertake social promotions, Facebook events, email invitations and other infrequent activities.

What motivated you to start volunteering?

When I first started university in 2017, my coordinator told each of us that volunteering while studying is probably the most important thing you could do. This is one of the best pieces of advice I have been given.

I decided to start volunteering because, as he explained, the experience you gain through volunteering will enhance your chances of succeeding after you graduate. You will gain valuable knowledge and experience that will set you apart from other graduates.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy being able to work in such a dedicated, diverse, and passionate community. The work I do is great, but the community is what I enjoy the most.

How do you manage to find the time for volunteering?

I will admit that at times it is very difficult, especially being a full-time university student. However, I try to think of it as a job. I have taken on this responsibility, and I have been trusted with these tasks so I just schedule it in. It may be difficult, but you just have to do it.

What skills have you developed through volunteering at CAS?

Technically, I have learnt how to design, coordinate and distribute an email newsletter, create social promotions and work with other volunteers. Personally, I have developed a better level of knowledge and confidence of the arts.

What has been the highlight of your volunteering experience so far?

The highlight of my experience so far would be getting the opportunity to meet so many amazing and talented people and work with people in the community who are just as passionate (if not more) about art as I am.

CAS is currently on the lookout for volunteers to join our enthusiastic team! We are looking for a Human Resources Coordinator, Facebook & Website Manager, and general Connection Team Members. Visit our volunteer information page to find a role that suits you. Applications close on Tuesday 5th November.
